I twirl around once, close my eyes, think of all the dogs at Hound’s Rescue . . . and I stim!

Then, once I’m calm, I look to the stormy sky and

WOOF!

The magical rainbow bubble surrounds me making me invisible, and I’m now in my special pyjamas and slippers!

First, I must send Bob back to the shelter, now that everyone is safely down the hill. Bob drags his tired paws over to me. I offer him a healthy treat, pat his head and click my fingers. “Thank you, friend!”

ZAP!

I magically send Bob back to the shelter.

Second, I think of which dogs are the friendliest, the calmest, the happiest. Colleen the kelpie was rehomed last week, she would have been perfect. I know! Labradors and retrievers!

I immediately scan my pyjamas and find the right dogs I need side by side on my left sleeve. I place my hand over each picture and send my love back to Hound’s Rescue.

I shout, “Ronald! Lara!”

ZAP!

Ronald the retriever and Lara the lab appear in front of me, their golden fur glistening as the rain runs off their backs. “Ronald and Lara, we have to help the children feel brave so they can find shelter at the undercover picnic area. Can you do it?”

Ronald and Lara woof and then bound away to the group of children.

I twirl around and magic out of my pyjamas and back into my clothes.

POW!

The two dogs make calming whines, snuzzle cold hands and wag their fluffy tails. The children and grown-ups begin to smile.

“More dogs are here to help us!”

“I can’t believe it!”

“They’re leading the way”

Alan Simpson places his hand on Ronald’s back and follows him first. All the children are starting to feel braver and the group begins to move again.

Even though there are more LOUD thunder claps, Ronald wags his tail faster and leads us on slowly and carefully, with several children’s hands on his back now. Lara gently nudges, whines and licks the others at the back of the group, until finally we reach the big picnic area.

Ronald and Lara are superstars!

But now we have another problem. The children in Miss Boyle’s class are

crying,

coughing,

sneezing.

We need to get WARM and DRY – and FAST. The car park is too far to run to in all this rain.

Miss Boyle hustles everyone into the covered picnic area, which is dry and safe. Heads are down, boots are squishy, and clothes are dripping as the group cram in together, huddling and cuddling, shaking and shivering, snotting and sniffling.

I have an idea!
